Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers History

The Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers rivalry is one of the oldest in the NBA. The first matchup between these teams occurred in 1948 where the Los Angeles Lakers (then the Minneapolis Lakers) defeated the Golden State Warriors (then the Philadelphia Warriors) 86-67. The Lakers relocated to Los Angeles for the 1960-61 season and were soon followed by the Warriors who moved to San Francisco for the 1962-63 season. Up to this point in time, the Lakers and Warriors were evenly matched.

At the end of the 1961-62 season, the Lakers barely had the advantage with a record 59-51. 1962 was also the first year the Warriors and Lakers were placed in the same NBA division, the West Division. The Lakers and Warriors have remained in the same division since they were both placed in California. These teams first met in the NBA Playoffs in 1968 when the Warriors defeated the Lakers 3-0 in the West Division Semifinals. This NBA Playoff victory was the only Warriors playoff defeat against the Lakers.

The rivals continued to meet in the NBA Playoffs and the Lakers have come out victorious in every contest: in the 1968 West Divisional Finals (4-0), 1969 West Division Semifinals (4-2), 1973 Western Conference Finals (4-1), 1977 Western Conference Semifinals (4-3), 1987 Western Conference Semifinals (4-1), 1991 Western Conference Semifinals (4-1) and 2023 Western Conference Semifinals (4-2).

The games between these divisional and Californian rivals are not known for their contention, but for their respect of the long-standing rivalry. As of 2023, the Los Angeles Lakers have the advantage in the overall regular season record of 261-173 as well as the postseason record of 28-13. The Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors have played an astounding total of 475 games against one another.
