God, That’s Good: Top Broadway Shows To See in February 2024

It may be the dead of winter in New York City, but February also marks a new era on Broadway. With the curtain rising on several new musicals and plays and plenty of other long-running shows still going strong, there’s an endless amount of red-hot entertainment on the Great White Way.

Below, we’ve rounded up all the new shows in NYC that are opening — including hotly-anticipated stage adaptations of The Notebook and Water for Elephants — as well as popular favorites and your last chance to see one truly special show. Shows Opening on Broadway in February 2024

The Notebook, Water for Elephants, and An Enemy of the People will all be hitting the stage in February. Here’s what you need to know about each show.

The Notebook

Based on the 2004 romantic drama film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams (as well as the original source material by Nicholas Sparks), The Notebook follows the love story of Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton through three separate timelines, touching on themes of separation, dementia and the enduring power of a star-crossed love. Featuring original music by Ingrid Michaelson, previews for The Notebook begin February 10 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

Water for Elephants

The circus is headed to Broadway! With a cast led by Grant Gustin, Isabelle McCalla and Gregg Edelman, Water for Elephants is based on the bestselling historical romance novel by Sara Gruen (not to mention the 2011 big screen adaptation starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon). In the 1930s, a young man named Jacob Jankowski joins the fictional Benzini Brothers Circus as an elephant trainer, but trouble arises as he falls for the cruel ringmaster’s glamorous wife Marlena. Previews are set to begin February 24 at the Imperial Theatre.

An Enemy of the People

Fresh off the series finale of Succession, Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Strong stars in the Broadway revival of Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 Norwegian straight play En folkefiende. Directed by Sam Gold, this new adaptation is by Tony nominee Amy Herzog, who wrote last year’s acclaimed revival of fellow Ibsen work A Doll’s House. Performances begin February 27 at Circle in the Square Theatre, where the show will play for just 16 weeks.

Sweeney Todd

Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street continues his killing streak at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. On February 9, Broadway royalty Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster will step into the respective roles of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett for a limited 12-week run, replacing the Tony-winning revival’s original stars, Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford.

MJ the Musical

MJ the Musical celebrates the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, with three different actors portraying the late King of Pop throughout his illustrious career. The jukebox musical takes audiences at Neil Simon Theatre behind the scenes of the superstar’s preparations for his 1992 Dangerous World Tour and features 25 of his biggest hits, from “Beat It” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin” to “Bad,” “Thriller,” “Man in the Mirror” and more.

How to Dance in Ohio

The dance is coming to an end for How to Dance in Ohio, the heartfelt musical adaptation of the 2015 documentary of the same name. Both follow the story of a group of autistic young adults preparing to attend their Spring Formal while confronting ableism and creating a chosen family. With Paula Abdul and Ludacris on its production team, the show — which takes its final bow February 11 at the Belasco Theatre — holds the distinction of being the first on Broadway to cast openly autistic actors to portray autistic characters.
