Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum History
Plans for a stadium in Oakland began to be discussed as early as the 1950s. As professional sports franchises and leagues looked to expand west, Oakland, and its neighboring city San Francisco became viable options for expansion. In 1960, plans were revealed for the Coliseum without a tenant in place. The hope was that the Oakland Raiders of the American Football League would use the new stadium as their home, which received support from local media. Plans for the venue to be built as a multi-purpose stadium were included after the American League indicated that it had identified Oakland as an expansion candidate in 1961.
In 1962, after receiving approval from the city of Oakland and Alameda County, as well as $25 million in financing, construction began. Construction faced delays for over two years before the stadium was eventually completed in 1966 as the home of the Oakland Raiders. In 1968, Charlie Finley, owner of the Kansas City Athletics, received permission from Major League Baseball to relocate the franchise to Oakland and the new stadium. The Kansas City Royals joined Major League Baseball one year later in 1969 as an expansion team.
Options to replace the stadium were sought after by both the Athletics and Raiders in 2005. When support for a separate football stadium fell through, the Raiders decided to relocate to Las Vegas and played their last season in Oakland in 2019.
Sites have been identified for a new baseball park throughout Alameda County since 2005, but no deal has been signed. In 2014, the Athletics signed a 10-year lease with Alameda County to remain at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, while receiving permission to look into a new stadium within Oakland city limits. In 2021, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred suggested that the Athletics franchise look into moving to a new city after plans stalled for relocation to another stadium within Oakland.
The 1987 MLB All-Star Game was held at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The Athletics also hosted World Series games in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1988, 1989, and 1990, and won the World Series in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989.
