Hollywood Pantages Theatre History

In the heart of Hollywood’s most dazzling stretch of entertainment destinations, the Hollywood Pantages Theatre is a historic venue in a historic location. Opened in 1930 as simply the Pantages Theatre, the art deco style building hosted the Academy Awards in the 1950s and was once owned by the eccentric businessman Howard Hughes, who renamed it the RKO Pantages Theatre. Restored in 2000, today the Hollywood Pantages Theatre is home to great Broadway musicals and other live performances.

Hollywood Pantages Theatre Performers

The splendid building has been a fixture in Los Angeles since vaudeville shows took to the stage in the 1930s and roadshow movies graced the screen into the 1970s. These days, the “Broadway in Hollywood” series of musicals in the ornate theater defines the Pantages experience. Think of any major Broadway production — the Pantages has probably hosted it. Show titles such as Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, The Lion King, Hamilton and Frozen have adorned the marquee. The Hollywood Pantages Theatre has also seen big-name concerts, in 1997 hosting Prince and Shakira (in her first U.S. appearance), as well as famously being the locale for the Talking Heads’ seminal 1984 concert film, Stop Making Sense.
